The Art of Neighbouring: Why Do You Live Where You Live?
"Go! I Am Sending You Out Like Lambs..."
Luke 10: 1-20

Jesus sends out his disciples twice to do the work of bringing the Kingdom. In Luke 9-10 he works intentionally with them, teaching and training them to do the miraculous things he’s been doing; healing & driving away evil spirits, building relationships of peace (remember shalom is “restoring, healing, setting things right”), and announcing the approach of the kingdom of God. Then Jesus sends them out to do it on their own.

Like lambs among wolves! Taking nothing!

Receiving whatever is offered to them! And shaking the dust off if they’re rejected.

Does this tell us anything about how we are to come to the new people God places in our path? How does Jesus send us to our neighbours, and what does he call us to do? Is the way we do it (the “how”) as important as what we do?

If we did these things intentionally in our relationships with neighbours and co-workers (the people in close proximity to us) how would those relationships be affected?

For this Sunday… read Luke 10:1-20 again. Why does Jesus tell them to take nothing extra? Why not speak to anyone on the road? What does ‘shaking the dust off’ mean?

God is in the business of transforming — recreating, rebuilding, and renewing all kinds of things: lives, friendships, marriages, organizations, cities, tribes, and nations. He invites us to participate with him in this. He calls it “following him." We call it our mission.

Worship at Immanuel

Worship at Immanuel is a time for our community to gather together to bring praise to God, to share our lives and stories with each other, and to hear what God has to say to us through the Bible. Our hope is that worship mirrors our relationship with God, and so gives us opportunity as a community to pray, sing, reflect, lament, offer, listen, and respond to the challenges of the Bible. Through the Holy Spirit, we pray that our worship will transform our lives so that we grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ our Saviour.
